ONE woman was shocked to learn the true value of the ring she picked up at a secondhand store.
After haggling the price down to $42, she had her thrifting buy appraised.

In her viral Reddit post, the unnamed poster gave her followers a close-up look at the jewelry.
She explained that she was instantly drawn to the ring but still bargained with the shop worker before buying it.
“I was told this was a green amethyst, and haggled to $42,” the Reddit user said.
However, once she examined the item further at home she decided to have it checked out by a professional.
“[I] took it to a jeweler to have it appraised,” she told her fellow social media users.
The jeweler was able to conclude that her new ring was not an amethyst after all.
In fact, the actual worth of the rock was almost 200 times what she had paid.
“It’s a rare green diamond,” the original poster informed her Reddit followers.
She revealed that the expensive rock has a 4.4-carat total weight and is estimated to be over 100 years old.
The successful thrifting find is thought to be “conservatively worth more than $8,000.”
According to the Reddit user, the thrift shop owner picked the item up through an estate sale.
“[It] must have been a rich family because there was a crazy amount of very expensive jewelry they said all came from the same person,” she explained.
“This was the only ring I could have afforded.”
She added that she always examines thrift store jewelry closely in case she comes across anything valuable.
“We do plan on getting a second opinion and insuring it,” she revealed in the comments section.
He tells me I better hold onto it, that this should be my new family heirloom.
Thrifter who purchased the ring
She also praised the jeweler who examined the piece for her for his honesty about the ring’s worth.
“The jeweler took it to a back room for a few minutes, and came back and asked me where I got it, was it willed to me after a family member died,” she explained.
“I told him [I purchased it from] a thrift store that got it from an estate sale.
“He tells me I better hold onto it, that this should be my new family heirloom.”
Reddit users shared their thoughts on the thrifting find in the comments section.
“I work in jewelry and yeah, no, that’s worth more than $8,000 EASY,” wrote one reader.
“I mainly thrift clothes, shoes, and bags, this makes me want to start looking at jewelry more closely,” said another person.
“Oh wow! Your unicorn arrived! Well done!” commented a third Redditor.
